Elmhurst's Holiday Season Runs Through One Corner of Wilder Park

On the Saturday of Halloween, the first event on the Elmhurst Park District calendar is a dog costume contest, and the Wilder Park Conservatory is already a week into its fall flower show. A month later, the trees around Wilder Park light up on a Thursday night. Two days after that, the conservatory opens a different show. In between, the Wilder Mansion fills with artisan vendors, the Elmhurst Art Museum opens its doors for free twice, and the Elmhurst Public Library runs a string of holiday programs.

Each of these organizations sets its own schedule, and the dates still land one after another, mostly on or near Prospect Avenue. From Halloween to mid-January, Elmhurst's season happens mostly around Wilder Park, not on York Street. And the lawn in the middle of it is set for its biggest change in decades once spring arrives.

The full season, by date

Here is what's scheduled, in order. Everything is free except the art museum's December 13 holiday party, which is included with museum admission and free for members.

Two notes on the table. The university's concert page doesn't say whether the orchestra concert is open to the public or what it costs, so check with Elmhurst University before you go. The library's two December history talks can also be joined on Zoom.

Four stretches when the block stacks up

On a calendar, the season bunches into four short stretches where several things happen within walking distance of each other.

  1. Saturday, October 31. The Howl-A-Ween Dog Costume Contest runs 11 a.m. to noon at Canine Corner Dog Park, and the Park District asks people to register. Trick-or-treating runs 3 to 7 p.m. citywide, according to the City of Elmhurst. That leaves a free afternoon in between, and the Wilder Park Conservatory fall show is open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

  2. Thursday, November 5 through Saturday, November 7. The Elmhurst Art Museum has a free admission day on Thursday. Its two current exhibitions, Resisting the Long War: A Revolution of Values and Abbott Pattison: The Figure Forward, run through January 3, 2027, and the first is part of the museum's 2026 Veteran Art Triennial. The next evening, RGL Marketing for the Arts opens its 15th Holiday Market at Wilder Mansion, with more than 55 artisans and gourmet food vendors selling pottery, stationery, fiber, jewelry, kids' clothing, mixed media, painting and food. Friday's hours, 4 to 8 p.m., are the after-work slot. Saturday runs 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

  3. Thursday, December 3 through Saturday, December 5. This is the one stretch where the dates don't line up neatly, so it gets its own section below.

  4. Saturday, December 12 and Sunday, December 13. The Elmhurst University Orchestra Winter Concert is Saturday at 7 p.m. in Hammerschmidt Memorial Chapel. On Sunday, the art museum hosts its Create With Us holiday party from 2 to 5 p.m. Santa arrives at 1:15 and stays until 2:45, so families who want the photo should come early.

The tree lighting falls in the conservatory's dark week

The Tree Lighting in Wilder Park is Thursday, December 3, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The Park District counts down to lighting the community trees around the park, with festivities outside and inside Wilder Mansion. The schedule includes Santa and Mrs. Claus, real reindeer, holiday carnival games and performances. Smallcakes of Elmhurst, Travelin' Tom's Coffee Truck and Waffle Hero are the listed food trucks. Parking is in Wilder Park's south lot and the Alexander Lot at Elmhurst University.

The conservatory, at Prospect Avenue and Church Street, will be closed that night. It goes dark from November 30 through December 4 while staff take down the fall show and build the holiday one. The Holiday Flower Show opens Saturday, December 5, two days after the lights go on, and runs through January 17, 2027. Built in 1923 as the Park District's first capital project, the conservatory is free year-round.

That shapes how the first week of December works. Thursday's crowd gets the trees and the mansion. On Friday, December 4, the art museum's second free admission day fills the gap. Saturday is the first chance to see the holiday flowers. Anyone hoping to do it all in one trip on the 3rd will find the greenhouse locked. Anyone who spreads it across three days gets something new each day.

The conservatory's posted hours, daily 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., cover April through December. If you're planning a January visit before the holiday show closes on the 17th, confirm the hours on the Park District's conservatory page first.

The lawn behind the mansion is next

The tree lighting, the biggest outdoor event on this calendar, takes place in the park where the Park District plans its next major project. According to the district's project page, the new Wilder Park community bandshell will sit south of the playground on the east lawn of Wilder Mansion. For decades, the district's temporary band wagon has stood on that spot as the backdrop for concerts, movies, egg hunts and other community events.

The bandshell is one piece of the Wilder Park South Master Plan, which the Park Board approved early in 2026. The plan also covers the former site of the Lizzadro Museum, which stood in Wilder Park for many decades and was torn down in 2023 after the museum moved to Oak Brook. The project includes a permanent heated restroom. After assessing the existing Wilder Park Recreation Building, the board chose to redevelop that building instead of putting up the standalone restroom it first proposed. The district lists the project's budget at $2.5 million.

Choosing the location wasn't simple. In June 2025, Patch reported that some residents questioned the site, citing sight lines to the mansion, green space and possible tree removal. In the same report, the Park District's executive director defended the spot by pointing to its event history, topography, lawn seating, nearby parking, trees, views and orientation.

Approval now runs through the City of Elmhurst. The Park District asked for a conditional use permit for a preliminary Planned Unit Development, and the commission's first hearing was August 25. At the October 6 continuation, staff and the consultants Dewberry and Upland Design answered the commission's questions. Commissioners then suggested setting guidelines for how the bandshell would operate, and Park District staff are working those out with City staff. The district listed October 20 as the date the commission would pick up its review again.

The district's timeline, which it calls subject to change, has construction starting in spring 2027 and the bandshell and restroom finished in fall 2027. Updates are posted on the Wilder Park bandshell project page. On that schedule, this winter's tree lighting is the last one held around the old setup on the east lawn.

Wilder Park isn't the only Park District project on that timeline. The district's October 2026 progress report has structural steel, roofing over the dance studio and offices, and underground utilities underway at the new Wagner Community Center, which is still on track to open in fall 2027. By next fall, Elmhurst could have two new public buildings opening in the same season, and next year's holiday calendar could look different.

I'll be following the bandshell review and the plans for Wilder Park South as they move forward, because changes like these show up in how buyers talk about the blocks around the park.
